Stanstead Abbotts-based writer penned the manuscript “at bus stops and in a notebook under her desk at school”
Most teenagers might spend their final school years revising, playing computer games or hanging out with their friends but industrious Nika M had other ideas. The now 19 year-old started writing a novel at the age of 15 which she has now published on Amazon Kindle.
The young adult fantasy Randouka which has a Biblical theme was published on Kindle in February under Nika’s penname, Akin Isa. Hard copies of the novel which focusses on the adventures of Saffron Schneider, recently deceased, are also due out soon.
“What were to happen if you met your guardian angel?,” explains Nika who lives in Stanstead Abbotts. “And how would you feel if they were just as awkwardly human as you? I invite my readers to think about these questions and many others, just think about what they want to do with life as a whole.
“Part one might seem a little rambling where you’re not exactly sure what to expect, but it is a build up that’s necessary for you to get to feel for the characters and get prepped for lots of action. There’s 405 pages so there’s plenty to sink your teeth into. More mature content the further you go.”
Nika spent four years writing the novel, hiding the notepad under her desk at school and “scribbling at rainy bus stops.” She filled up three notebooks which she used to carry around in her bag and also designed the book’s artwork.
“My graphic design skills were put to the test with a deceptively bright jacket and character/action sketches for every chapter,” she says. “Overall my writing has lasted four years and been one heck of a journey! In those testing years you can tell I’ve grown as a person just as much as my characters, if not more.
“There have been times when I was really impatient to get the book finished, but I can tell you, every moment was worth it. It is self published on Amazon as an ebook, so getting a printed version will be the next challenge, which will probably take a few months. Marketing is another task to get stuck in to.”
Randouka is £5.50 and out now on Amazon Kindle.
