Scratching your head for gift ideas this festive season? Coming up with something original each year can be tricky. But don’t worry, we’ve got some great suggestions of gifts available from some of our fantastic local Hertfordshire shops and businesses. Why not spend your money locally this year?
Get a Christmas cake kit from Replenish Refill
Is your friend or relative a hardcore Bake-Off fan? Then Hertford’s zero-waste shop has a great present idea for you. Replenish Refill at Mudlark Cafe’s former premises in Railway Street is offering ‘make your own Christmas cake kits’ for £9.99. The kit includes nearly everything you need to make the cake – all the dry ingredients, including a Kilner jar of raisins and sultanas, almonds, sugar, mixed peel, flour and spices – and you’ll just need to add the extras such as eggs, butter, plus a generous shot of brandy and port. The kits are pre-order only – you can do so by contacting owner Emma Riddle at firstname.lastname@example.org or over Instagram or Facebook.
Check out the zero-waste shop’s other goodies, such as eco-friendly Christmas decorations, soaps and beauty products, beautiful Sari wraps, which can be used as reusable present wrapping and or as a scarf, plus stock up on all the grocery products you might need over the Christmas period, such as pasta, coffee beans, spices and cleaning products. Replenish Refill offers click and collect services and can deliver if you are self-isolating.
Treat yourself to a tipple from The Crafty Duck
Looking forward to a little something to warm the cockles over the festive period? The Crafty Duck in Parliament Square in Hertford, while currently closed to drink-in customers, continues to operate as an off-licence and has some fantastic ales in stock, making great Christmas presents for the craft beer enthusiast. New in are Electric Bear’s Same As It Never Was, a West Coast IPA inspired by early 2000 hip hop (£4.75), Magnify’s Heating Up, an Indian pale ale (£6.85), and Delirium Noel Christmas Winter Warmer (£4.95). Among many other options, there’s also Burning Sky’s Saison Anniversaire, brewed once a year (£13.95) and ABC’s Steeple Jack Porter (£3.35). You can order directly from the website or Facebook page and delivery is free with orders over £50 or you can collect from the bar.
Winter warmers from The Morley Stove Company
It’s turning pretty chilly now we’re closer to the big day, so why not invest in something genuinely warming? The Morley Stove Company has everything for the outdoor cooking enthusiast, from the iconic Big Green Egg BBQs to Ooni pizza ovens and firepits. The official retailer of RB73 outdoor stoves, Big Green Egg BBQs and Everhot range cookers supplies and installs high quality stoves and fireplaces within a 30-mile radius of Ware, including Bedfordshire, London and Essex. What’s more, its large showroom houses the county’s biggest display of wood-burning stoves – mostly UK and Scandinavian brands – with more than 60 on show and many lit so you can see them in action.
The family-run business also offers £100 gift vouchers and accessories such as companion sets, fuel and log baskets. Check out their Instagram or Facebook pages and visit their store on Marsh Lane in Ware to find out more.

Adopt an animal at Cedars Nature Centre
If you’re after something a bit different to give this year that also gives back, what about adopting an animal at Cedars Nature Centre, based at Cedars Park in Cheshunt? The mini zoo offers different entry levels for adoptions, with £20 for bronze, which includes a certificate of adoption and your name on the animal enclosure, silver (£35) which includes a special gift pack of a mug, keyring and magnet featuring your adopted animal, plus gold (£50) where you also get the opportunity to meet your adopted animal (although not available for Kendra, the Burmese python…). Visit the website for more details or contact their Facebook page.
It’s a wrap at The Feathers…
And, if you can’t face wrapping all your presents, why not head down to the Feathers Pub in Wadesmill which, for a £1 donation to Macmillan, will do it for you? And what’s more, they use eco-friendly brown wrapping paper or you can bring your own.
Let’s do what we can to shop local this Christmas.
